The 2004 European Union – Qantas Journalist Award

Applications are being sought for the 2004 European Union - Qantas Journalist Award. The Award is open to an Australian journalist of not less than five years experience in the print or electronic media, who can satisfy the selection panel that he or she would benefit from a working visit to EU institutions and up to three Member States.

Preference will be given to applicants in a position to increase Australian understanding of EU affairs by having material published or broadcast. Employees of media organisations must have their employer’s written support and recommendation as well as confirmation they will be free to take up the program.

Selection will be based primarily on the journalist’s proposal outlining an issue or issues on European integration to be pursued during the visit. Originality and innovation in the development of themes will be valued highly, as will their appropriateness for the target audience in Australia. The selection panel will also take into account three examples of the applicant’s work published or broadcast in the previous 12 months.

Applications close on Friday 30 January 2004.

Three copies of the application and all materials, including video/audio tapes and CDs and a CV, are essential.

The EU will assist the journalist in formulating a suitable programme of up to 20 days that must be undertaken by the end of the year. The Award provides reasonable accommodation costs and a living allowance. Business class travel to and from Europe is courtesy of Qantas Airways and arranged by Travel Makers of Canberra.
