Hague Appeal for Peace: Support the Geneva Accords

Support the Geneva Accords

The Hague Appeal for Peace congratulates the negotiators, men and women, from Palestinian and Israeli civil society who have spent the past two years, with the facilitation of the Swiss government, in arriving at a plan for peace in the Middle East.

Hundreds of representatives from the Middle East will be joined by former President Jimmy Carter at a signing ceremony today in Geneva. We send them our very best wishes and congratulations. We also pledge to help mobilize support for these Accords from around the world.

Over a million and a half copies of the Geneva Initiative have been distributed in Hebrew, Arabic and Russian throughout Israel, the West Bank and Gaza so that every citizen can know what it says and can comment. This is participatory democracy and will give the people who will live in peace together a sense of ownership.

We call on all our colleagues to send letters of support, to ask their government leaders to send messages of support, and to use the Geneva Initiative as a resource for peace education in their homes, schools and communities.

Our colleagues from MECA, the Middle East Children's Association, led by an Israeli, Adina Shapiro, and a Palestinian, Ghassan Abdullah, are engaging a group to write an annex about Peace Education to be included with the agreement.

These courageous and creative negotiators have spent over two years working out this agreement. It is a tribute to what civil society can do when governments fail to make peace.

Thank you for keeping the light of this Initiative alive and for sending the Swiss government and the negotiators, led by Mr. Yossi Beilin and Mr. Yasser Abed Rabbo, messages of support.

A fact sheet about the Accords is available at: http://www.peacenow.org/nia/briefs/geneva.html

With hope for its success, and appreciation for what you do, Sincerely,

Cora Weiss President
