Hezbollah SG Says Prisoner Swap Negotiations Go On, Israeli Sources Indicate Cabinet Considers A Solution
Hezbollah Secretary General Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah issued a statement on the prisoner swap issue with Israel. The
statement said "a new round of negotiations was held between Hezbollah and the German mediator in an attempt to find a
solution for unsettled issues".
It added "both sides agreed to keep details of the negotiations secret during this sensitive stage so as to procure a
better atmosphere to reach a positive final result."
Months of German-brokered talks have stuck over the fate of Lebanese detainee Samir Qintar's fate.
The Israeli cabinet last week has conditionally approved the prisoner exchange deal with Hezbollah but refused to
release Qintar.
Meanwhile, the Israeli radio reported Israeli political sources as saying that the Israeli government was considering a
logical solution concerning the detainee Samir Qintar in order to ease reaching a prisoner swap agreement with
Hezbollah.
The Israeli daily Maariv for its part quoted an Israeli official accompanying Israeli Premier Ariel Sharon to Italy as
saying that there are discussions to find a way out concerning the Qintar problem.
He said one of the proposals is that of reducing the prison term of Qintar so that he can be released after several
years. He also said another solution would be to get a hint on the fate of missing Israeli airman Ron Arad or
information about 3 Israeli soldiers that went missing during the 1982 Sultan Yaakub battle in Lebanon.
