Red Cross societies of the two Koreas on Thursday (Sept. 4) exchanged the search results for kin of 200 candidates chosen from each side to take part in the eighth inter-Korean family reunions.

At a liaison officers¡¯ exchange at the truce village of Panmunjeom in the morning, North Korea said it confirmed the whereabouts of relatives of 135 South Koreans, of whom 105 still had living relatives in the North.

South Korea said it was able to track down the whereabouts of kin for 190 candidates on the North¡¯s list, of whom 182 had at least a distant relative living in the South.

In all, North Korea confirmed the names of 1015 North Korean kin of 200 South Korean applicants, which breaks down to 301 alive, 329 dead, and 385 missing.

South Korea confirmed the names of 1,629 relatives of 200 North Koreans whose names were turned in via the Red Cross. Of them, 1,033 were alive, 436 were dead and 160 were missing.

Both Seoul and Pyongyang will narrow down the list to 100 each, based on the search results, and exchange the finalized version on Sept. 7, according to the South¡¯s Korea National Red Cross.

The eighth Inter-Korean family reunions will be held from Sept. 20-25 at the North¡¯s Mt. Geumgang resort. One hundred North Koreans will meet their South Korean families first, followed by 100 South Koreans meeting their Northern kin later.
