Soldier Dies In East Timor
An investigation is underway into the death of a New Zealand soldier in East Timor.
Private Dean Russell Johnston, 20 years, originally from Christchurch, was attached to the National Command Element of the New Zealand contingent. He died as the result of an incident in the vicinity of the Obrigado Barracks near Dili early this morning. Early indications are that no one else is involved. The investigation is being carried out by the United Nations. No further details are available.
“Our heartfelt condolences go out to the family”, says Air Marshal Bruce Ferguson, Chief of Defence Force. “We regret the loss of any serviceperson’s life.
