Minister Calls for 2002 Living in Harmony Applications

The Minister for Citizenship and Multicultural Affairs, Gary Hardgrave, today invited applications for the 2002 Living in Harmony community grants round.

"I was pleased to announce the Commonwealth Government's ongoing commitment of $3.5 million over the next four years to the Living in Harmony initiative in the 2002 Budget," Mr Hardgrave said.

"The community grants round is a major element of this initiative, which encourages community organisations to work with multicultural and Indigenous communities to promote harmony in communities across Australia."

"The Government's commitment will build upon the success of previous grants funded under the initiative."

Mr Hardgrave invited community organisations to consider how this funding could help to make a difference in their communities and to apply for the Living in Harmony grants.

"For 2002-2003, the Government has allocated $1.5 million for projects between $5,000 to $50,000 per grant to promote community harmony at the local level," Mr Hardgrave said.

The Minister announced the grants round at the opening of the new Department of Immigration and Multicultural and Indigenous Affairs' 'Gateway' building in Sydney.

He also announced the Diversity Australia website and presented certificates of appreciation to key Harmony Day community partners.

Applications for Living in Harmony grants will be accepted from incorporated, not-for-profit organisations and also from schools.

Applications must be lodged by Friday 26 July 2002 with the Department of Immigration and Multicultural and Indigenous Affairs, Canberra.
