Kiwis Respond Generously To Humanitarian Crisis – But More Needed

New Zealanders have already donated more than $60,000 to help respond to the humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan and neighbouring countries, the New Zealand Red Cross announced today.

The funds will be forwarded directly to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, which is co-ordinating a massive relief programme in the region.

New Zealand Red Cross International Programmes Co-ordinator, Greg Clewley, said the New Zealand response had been pleasing so far. “Once again, New Zealanders are showing their support for people in need where-ever they are in the world.”

However, he said the International Federation has warned that more funds are needed if humanitarian aid is to reach Afghans fleeing military strikes in time.

Jean Ayoub, Director of Disaster Operations at the International Federation, said that although donors have responded generously with material aid, “we need more cash in order to get aid to people when they need it most."

“Now that air strikes have begun on Afghanistan, there is an urgent need for action that will ensure people are protected from the approaching winter.”

In total, the International Federation is seeking NZ$62million which will be used to provide shelter, food, health care and clean water and sanitation for up to 500,000 Afghan refugees, as well as continuing health care in Afghanistan.
