A native of New Zealand, Beaven had a diverse legal career which included stints as a law professor at Kings College, London, England; a criminal defense attorney in private practice in England; a Lead Prosecutor at Scotland Yard in London; a private commercial practice in Lisbon, Portugal; as an Investment Representative in Hong Kong; and as a trial attorney with Lipsig & Partners in New York City.
In 1992, he, along with Joe Tabacco, opened the San Francisco office of Stamell Tabacco & Schager. In 1995, Tabacco and Beaven formed the San Francisco office of Berman, DeValerio, Pease & Tabacco, which recently merged with a West Palm Beach Florida firm to form Berman DeValerio Pease Tabacco Burt & Pucillo.
Tabacco, a partner in the San Francisco office, said "Alan was an environmental champion whose numerous successful prosecutions have markedly improved water quality throughout California. The environmental bar has lost one of its brightest stars."
He was to begin a year's sabbatical in Bombay, India as a volunteer for the SYDA Foundation, an international non-profit organization dedicated to humanitarian and spiritual work. He had long been a practitioner of meditation and Siddha yoga. Beaven was in route to San Francisco on United flight 93, preparing to try one last case in federal court in Sacramento before he was to begin his sabbatical.
Alan was educated at the University of Auckland, New Zealand (LL.B., honors, 1974), where he received the Butterworth Prize, and later qualified as a Barrister in England in 1980. He was a member of the New York and California bars.
He is survived by his wife, Kimi, and daughter, Sonali, and two sons, John and Chris, from a former marriage.
Details regarding a memorial service will be announced at a future time.
