Bomb threat in Suva; fire-bomb in Navua
Media reports of a bomb threat in Suva, and a firebomb in Navua within the past two days have raised renewed concerns about security in Fiji.
The media reported that yesterday the military sealed off a large part of Victoria Parade in Suva after receiving a bomb threat. The ANZ building in central Suva, which also houses the UNDP and other organizations, was evacuated. The call, received by the military at 3.15pm, was found to be a hoax.
40 Km from Suva, residents in Naitata Navua found a fire-bomb inside a temple. The bomb was allegedly left by a band of youth which was seen roaming in the area. The band entered the temple, but fled when a resident pulled into a junction near the temple. Yesterday's Fiji Times reports a resident saying: "We suspect that a group of youths are targeting homes and other places in the area".
Meanwhile, the police deny reports that villagers from Tailevu bought 800 knives from a Suva hardware.
Rumours of another uprising has been rife in Fiji. Initially rumours were strong that there would be riots on 19 February. Now there are rumours that the riots will be after the appeals court hands down its decision which may be against the regime. The police and the military continue to assure the people that they are in control of the security situation. The Fiji Labour Party has commended the security forces for taking the initiative to ensure peace and harmony in the country.
