Police continue to deny awareness of illegal arms shipment

The Fiji police has continued to deny reports of an illegal arms shipment bound for Fiji.

According to a Radio Fiji news report last night, Police Commissioner Isikia Savua said there was no truth to the report that there was a container of arms bound for Fiji. The Radio station asked Savua whether he was aware that the arms were to be used for another mutiny in the army before the regime's appeal is decided on. Savua stated these were rumours and had no factual basis.

Media reports hold that according to an Interpol source a container, labelled equipment for oil drilling and exploration is on its way to Fiji. It further state that the ship may be coming via Tuvalu. Tuvalu's High Commissioner to Fiji has alerted his government of the ship and the container.

Savua stated that the Interpol would first report to Interpol's contact at the Police Department, which is the Criminal Investigations Dept. To date, he claimed, no such report has been received.

Radio Fiji has not revealed the source of its reports.
