Tarakinikini rejected by UN; regime humiliated by Qarase's letter

The UN has rejected Lt. Col. Filipo Tarakinikini's high-profiler application for a UN secondment for a year.

The military announced this week that the UN has not provided any reason for this. But it is understood that the rejection was because of ongoing investigations in Tarakinikini's role in the 19 May and 2 Nov attempted coups.

Last week regime Prime Minister had also written to the UN's Secretary General telling him that Tarakinikini was cleared of all charges, and that he had Fiji's support for the job. It was earlier reported by the media that some senior civil servants had objected to Tarakinikini's appointment. The military also refuted Qarase's claim that Tarakinikini was cleared of all charges.

The Qarase letter, based on misinformation, has caused Fiji serious humiliation at the UN. Sources say that Qarase should have kept out of the matter, and that the fact that Qarase was advised to write to the Secretary General on a matter of appointment displays the calibre of advise which the regime is getting.
