Papua New Guinea's Opposition leader Bill Skate says the country's Parliament should be convened immediately to deal with the Bougainville issue.

His call follows the announcement that PNG and Bougainville leaders have

agreed on holding a referendum on the political future of the troubled island.

Mr Skate says Parliament should be recalled to amend the provisions in the national constitution which relate to holding of a referendum.

He made the call when commending Sir Mekere Morauta's government for clearing the main stumbling block to a political solution on Bougainville.

Mr Skate says with the commitment it has given to the Bougainville leaders and their people, the national government must now speed up the process by getting parliament to approve the deal. (15:55:09 AEST)
