FIJI: Police charge two Fiji journalists

POLICE CHARGE TWO FIJI JOURNALISTS

SUVA (Pacnews): Police in Fiji have charged two journalists in controversial circumstances concerning their coverage of the mutiny of soldiers during May at an army base in northern Fiji, reports Pacnews.

Pacnews reported on 13 November 2000 that it had been informed that Fiji Times newspaper journalist Ruci Mafi and Radio Fiji's correspondent Theresa Ralogaivau faced unlawful assembly charges.

They were informed of this when they were told to report to the police station in the northern town of Labasa where both are based.

The charges are related to their coverage of the mutiny, which followed the coup by failed businessman George Speight who is now detained facing treason charges.

Police official spokesperson acting Assistant Superintendent Sera Bernard was unaware of the charges when contacted by Pacnews this afternoon.

However, Radio Fiji confirmed the development, and the national radio service has been in touch with company lawyers.

Pacnews also sought comments from the Fiji Times.
