Human Rights Commitee Holds Seminar On Maluka
MEDIA RELEASE: Indonesia Human Rights Committee will hold seminar on Maluku (The Spice Islands)
The Indonesia Human Rights Committee is joining with the University Asian Studies Dept (Asian Section) to hold a seminar on the situation in Maluka ('The Spice Islands") where brutal conflict has caused the loss of over 4000 lives in the last 18 months.
The seminar is also supported by the University Islamic Society and the Auckland Indonesian Students Association.
Time: 6pm Thursday 31 August
Place: Philosophy Building Room G 06, 11 Symonds St
(Philosophy Building)
The speakers include:
1. Rev.
Jusak Susabda from St.Andrews Church,
2. Graeme MacRae,
Antropologist (Indonesian Specialist) from
Massey
University,
3. Krishna, Chairman of AISA
(Indonesian Students Association)
4. Ronny Tomasoa, a
native Moluccan
The conflict is often portrayed as a
religious conflict but there is considerable evidence that
the conflict has been fomented by military and political
forces close to the old Suharto elite. The seminar will
explore some of the issues and discuss how we in New Zealand
can help with the human rights tragedy that has evolved.
