1) Peacekeepers clash with Militia near Suai, no casualties 18/08/00 (Lusa) DILI - A United Nations peacekeeping force patrol in East Timor clashed with a band of armed infiltrators near the Indonesian border but no casualties were reported, a PKF spokesman said Thursday in Dili.

2) UN force on high alert as Militia stalk 18/08/00 (Sydney Morning Herald) TIMOR - Security on the East Timor border is at an all-time high, with the United Nations peacekeeping force struggling to cope with militia incursions which have left some local people afraid and vulnerable.

3) New Political Party a 'Joke' - João Carrascalão 18/08/00 (Lusa) DILI - The leader of the Timorese Democratic Union (UDT), Joao Carrascalao, downplayed Thursday the impact of a new center-right political party in East Timor - a project he termed "nothing more than a joke in bad taste."

4) Militias demand partition 18/08/00 (South China Morning Post) KUPANG - Pro-Indonesian militia and political leaders in West Timor are demanding East Timor be partitioned to accommodate 130,000 refugees still living in camps in Indonesian West Timor.

6) Japanese children's drawings to be exhibited 18/08/00 (Kyodo) DILI - A Japanese man promoting cultural exchanges between Japan and East Timor has said he has brought to Dili 100 drawings by Japanese children for exhibition in the territory.
