LONDON (AP) - Dutch police investigating the deaths of 58 Chinese illegal immigrants found packed into an unventilated truck in England said Wednesday they have arrested the owner of the trucking company.
The arrest brings to three the number of people in custody in the suffocation deaths of the immigrants, who were found late Sunday when inspectors in Dover, England searched the truck. Government officials said more arrests may follow.
The latest suspect surrendered to police in the Dutch port of Rotterdam Tuesday evening.
Following Dutch custom, police did not release the suspect's name, but they said he was the 24-year-old Rotterdam resident who had registered the trucking company. Earlier, authorities identified that man as Arie van der Spek, an engineer.
Van der Spek was arrested on charges of involvement in the smuggling of aliens, said Tjebbe de Jong, spokesman for the Unit of Alien Smuggling in the Justice Department.
