Evacuation of Australians from Solomon Islands
The evacuation from Honiara of Australian and other foreign nationals commenced at 5:30pm (AEST) and continued until 8:00pm.
Approximately 250 people have been taken onboard HMAS Tobruk, which will remain at anchor in Honiara harbour at a heightened alert status.
The situation in the vicinity of the evacuation has been calm throughout the operation. Evacuees were transported to the Tobruk by landing craft and no problems have been reported.
Women and children were encouraged to board the Tobruk first. The Australian High Commission continues to urge foreign nationals to take advantage of the opportunity to depart Honiara on the HMAS Tobruk.
It is envisaged that the ship will resume embarkation at 8:00am Friday. No decision on a destination has been finalised, as this will be determined, to a large extent, by the number of civilians onboard at time of sailing. The Tobruk is capable of accepting more than 800 people.
