“Business will soon get to a total standstill if nothing very drastic is done within the next few days,” said the Zimbabwe National Chamber of Commerce in a statement last night.
The business body added that some sectors of the economy were already operating below capacity as a result of the fuel shortage, which has gripped the country for the past three months and has now been worsened by Cyclone Eline which has cut supply routes from Mozambique.
he Minister of Transport and Energy, Cde Enos Chikowore, said the Government had put in place contingency measures to bring in additional two block trains a day through Beitbridge from South Africa.
This follows the failure of Vessel MT Acushnet from BP Southern Africa, which arrived in Beira on Sunday, to berth due to the bad weather caused by Cyclone Eline.
The vessel is carrying cargo of various fuel products and the latest development is that the Acushnet vessel cannot berth due to the passage being blocked by another vessel M/V “Zambeze,” which we are advised sank during the cyclone,” he said.
