SUBJECT: TOKYO MEDIA REACTION - U.S.-INDIA SUMMIT
1. LEAD STORIES: Top stories on Wednesday morning included a Yomiuri
report claiming that a political organization linked to Prime
Minister Hatoyama allegedly made "false statements" regarding
political donations.
2. "U.S. and India Take Step toward Relationship of Strategic
Cooperation" The conservative Sankei wrote from Washington (11/25):
"President Obama held a meeting with Indian President Singh on
Tuesday at the White House at which they discussed such issues as
antiterrorism measures, environment, and energy. By holding the
summit meeting with China in Beijing and inviting the Indian leader
to the U.S., the U.S. launched its Asia diplomacy that is sensitive
to the balance between the two major emerging powers. At the
beginning of their meeting, the U.S. and Indian leaders stressed
their common values, such as freedom and democratization, and
announced their intention to pursue a 'broader and deeper strategic
partnership.'... In the U.S., there is a widely accepted view that
the President achieved only 'limited results' during his trip to
China, as the visit was carried out under the leadership of China.
President Obama apparently hopes to demonstrate concrete results
from his meeting with the Indian leader in such areas as energy
cooperation and limits on greenhouse gas emissions."
