SUBJECT: UPDATE ON PKK VIOLENCE (SEPTEMBER 16-23, 2009)

1. (SBU) This is another in a series of weekly reports on PKK
violence in Turkey. Our primary source is the Turkish General Staff
(TGS) website, which documents contacts and clashes with the PKK, as
well as casualties incurred.
2. (U) During the period September 16-23, one security official was
injured when the PKK opened fire on a military unit in the Hakkari
province on September 23. The total number of security force
casualties for the year through September 23 is 51 killed and 84
injured.
3. (U) During the same period, two PKK militants were captured in
Batman and Sirnak provinces on September 16 and 19. Three PKK
militants surrendered in Diyarbakir, Mardin and Bingol provinces on
September 16, 22 and 23. According to official TGS website figures,
through the third week of September the number of PKK militants
killed this year is 39, the number of those captured is 48, and the
number of those who surrendered is 95.
4. (U) During the reporting period one civilian was killed when he
stepped on a PKK landmine in Hakkari province on September 22. The
PKK kidnapped a civilian in Bingol province on September 17. The
total number of civilian casualties for the year through the end of
the third week of September is 13 killed and 23 wounded.
