SUBJECT: Update on PKK Violence (October 8-15, 2008)

1. (SBU) This is another in a series of weekly reports on PKK
violence in Turkey. Our primary source is the Turkish General Staff
(TGS) website, which documents contacts and clashes with the PKK, as
well as casualties incurred.
2. (U) During the October 8-15, 2008 reporting period, nine security
officials died, including four policemen in Diyarbakir, four
soldiers in clashes in Cukurca, Hakkari and one soldier in a
helicopter crash. Another 42 were injured, including 18 policemen
in Diyarbakir, three soldiers by IEDs, six soldiers in an ambush and
15 soldiers in a helicopter crash. The total number of security
forces casualties for the year through October 15, 2008, was 136
killed and 230 injured.
3. (U) During the same period, six PKK terrorists were killed in the
clashes. Three PKKers were captured and another one surrendered.
According to official TGS website figures, through the second week
of October, the number of PKK militants killed this year was 637,
the number of those captured was 141, and the number of those who
surrendered was 129.
4. (U) During the reporting period the body of a citizen, who was
captured by the PKK in Lice on September 27, was found on October
10. Another citizen lost his life when he stepped on a landmine in
Bitlis on October 15. The PKK kidnapped two citizens in Pulumur,
Tunceli on October 13. The total number of civilian casualties for
the year through the end of the second week of October, was 45
killed, and with another 245 wounded.
