SUBJECT: LATVIANS TO TOW EU LINE AT ITU
1. Pol-Econ Off met with Guntis Macs, Deputy State Secretary with
the Ministry of Transportation, to deliver copies of the diplomatic
notes and demarche on the US candidacy for the International
Telecommunications Union (ITU) Council and the US candidate for the
ITU's Radio Regulations Board, Julie Zoller. Macs said that he will
head Latvia's delegation to the ITU Plenipotentiary Conference in
Turkey. He stated that he is personally favorable of US candidates,
as he has worked in American companies and "understands and likes
how Americans think". That said, Macs said that Latvia would
support the European Union consensus, though he did not have
information yet on what that consensus opinion would be.
