SUBJECT: ESTONIA: GOVERNMENT PROPOSES IRAQI MISSION
EXTENSION

(U) The Government of Estonia has agreed on the text
of a bill to extend the mandate for Estonian troop
deployment in Iraq by an additional 12 months (until
December 31, 2007). The present mandate of Estonian
troops in Iraq expires this year on Dec. 31. The
government will not, however, forward the bill to
Parliament until after the UN Security Council mandate
is renewed. The GOE's bill increases Estonian
participation to 40 troops. The Estonian Defense
Forces have already started training a new unit
(ESTPLA-14) for deployment in Iraq to ensure a
seamless rotation upon renewal of the mission mandate.
