The following projects represent current USAID programs
supportive of the Global Internet Freedom Task Force (GIFT)
objectives:

(1) Project Name: Zanzibar Joint Ministry Internet Project

Recipient: Funds are first transferred to DANIDA and then to
Zanlink which has the mandate of setting up internet
connectivity services within the Ministries of Health and
Social Welfare, Education, Culture and Sports, Regional
Administration, Local Governance and special Departments.

Project Description: Initiating and instituting ICT
throughout Unguja and Pemba to strengthen health, education
and local government facilities.

IT Component: (i) To establish and maintain ICT support
facilities with adequate resources to keep the ICT network
operational. (ii) To install and maintain internet services
at designated sites in each district.

FY 05 Funding: USD 100,000
FY 06 Funding: USD 0

(2) Project Name: Tanzania Governance Notice Board

Recipient: Research for Poverty Alleviation (REPOA)

Project Description: Expanding Public Expenditure Tracking
Systems to increase public awareness of government spending
and allocation of public funds in an accountable manner.

IT Component: Provision of computers and web-pages to be
accessed by different stakeholders.

FY 05 Funding: USD 1,000,000
FY 06 Funding: USD 1,000,000

(3) Project Name: Last Mile Initiative

Recipient: Tanzania National Parks, Manyara Ranch, Karatu
Lutheran Hospital, and two private internet cafes.

Project Description: This is a pilot project under the Last
Mile Initiative to form an alliance and extend existing rural
telecommunications investments to a variety of rural
customers.

IT Component: Procurement of wireless local loop equipment
and Customer Premises Equipment (CPE) with additional
hardware, software, and construction of
telecommunication/signal towers.

FY 04 Funding: USD 100,000
FY 05 Funding: USD 250,000
FY 06 Funding: USD 0
