RESOLUTION ON LEBANON

PolCounselor delivered reftel demarche to Vitus Njiku, Head
of the UN Security Council Unit of Tanzania'a Ministry of
Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, at opening of
business on August 14. Njiku stated that the Government of
Tanzania (GOT) of course fully supports Resolution 1701 as
evidenced by the GOT'S vote for the resolution as a UN
Security Council member. He noted Tanzania's appreciation
for the Secretary's August 11 statement on the Israel-Lebanon
resolution. Njiku also reiterated that a top GOT priority
remains that the UNSC Resolution 1559 (2004), requiring the
disarmament of all armed groups in Lebanon, be "fully
implemented, as quickly as possible."
