SUBJECT: RTG RECONSIDERS U.S. CANDIDATE FOR UN HUMAN RIGHTS
COMMITTEE

REF: A. BANGKOK 04921

B. STATE 130666

On August 25, Mr. Jirajett Wongnorraset of MFA's Department
of International Organizations telephoned to inform Poloff
that the RTG will likely reconsider its position on the
candidacy of Ruth Wedgwood for the UN Human Rights Committee
(see Reftel A). Jirajett informed that he was contacted on
August 24 by the RTG Permanent Mission to the UN in New York
and informed that "circumstances had changed" and the RTG
will reconsider Professor Wedgwood. Jirajett stopped short of
offering an assurance that the RTG would vote in favor of
Wedgwood. Nevertheless, he emphasized that the RTG is now in
a position to reconsider her candidacy.
