ELECTION

1. The Ambassador called on Foreign Ministry Director General
(the MFA's number 3) Carlos Portales on December 12, in part
to deliver reftel demarche regarding the December 15
elections in Iraq. The Ambassador briefed Portales on the
significance of the elections and emphasized that it was
important that successful democracies like Chile show their
support for the Iraqi people by issuing positive statements
prior to and after the December 15 elections. Portales
listened attentively and said he would study the request.
2. Poloff separately delivered reftel points to Foreign
Ministry Director for Middle East Affairs Luis Palma. Poloff
briefed Palma on the Ambassador's meeting with Portales and
reiterated the request that Chile issue positive statements
about the elections.
3. Post will follow up with the Foreign Ministry after the
December 15 election.
