START MEMO NOMINATING-JUSTIFICATION:
Dr. Mohamed Ali is the Director of Environment and
Director, Environmental Research Center, Ministry of
Home Affairs, Housing and Environment. Dr. Ali is
the main player in the environment sector in the
Maldives (next to the Minister) and our key
environment contact. The Maldives possesses a
unique and fragile environment, which should be
managed properly. Environment issues such as global
climate change, sea level rise, global warming,
garbage disposal, air pollution and coral reef
protection will all effect the Maldives' economic
growth and its very survival over the next few
decades.
Dr. Mohamed Ali is also highly regarded by the UNDP
officials in Maldives. Dr. Ali has a Ph.D. in
Coastal Geology from University of New South Wales,
Australia. He has been to US in April 2002 to
attend a WSSD summit in NY.
Given his key role in environment sector, sending
Dr. Ali for this program will help strengthen our
ties and also enable him to learn first hand about
environment issues from a US perspective. We hope
this exposure will help him to appreciate US
positions on this important global subject and
consequently he will be able to play a more
constructive role in environment policy making.
