SUBJECT: MUGABE CONVEYS JULY 4 MESSAGE TO PRESIDENT BUSH

1. On July 5, post received a letter from President Mugabe
to President Bush conveying the former's congratulations on
the occasion of July 4th. The original letter has been
forwarded by diplomatic pouch to AF/S.

2. The text of President Mugabe's letter is as follows:

27 June 2002

Mr. President,

On behalf of the Government and the people of Zimbabwe, and
on my own behalf, I convey to Your Excellency and through
you to the Government and people of the United States of
America, profound congratulations on your country's
attainment of 226 years of sovereign independence.

I am confident that the years ahead will witness great
improvements in relations between our two countries.

I wish you continued good health, and peace and prosperity
for the people of the United States of America.

Please accept, Your Excellency, the assurances of my
highest consideration.
