Top of the table clash this weekend – Canterbury United Dragons
Canterbury United urge local football fans to come out at show their support this weekend, as The Dragons remain firmly in the hunt for a home semi-final.
The Canterbury United Dragons will host top of the table Auckland City FC this Sunday (14th February) at the home of Canterbury football, English Park.
The Canterbury side took a giant step towards clinching a National League playoff spot last Sunday in Hamilton, when a superb injury time strike from defender, Brock Messenger, gave them a 3-2 win over WaiBOP United at FMG Stadium.
Messenger’s long range strike - in the 93rd minute - ensured the dramatic win, which elevated Canterbury back into second place on the ASB Premiership ladder.
Head Coach Willy Gerdsen realises the importance of coming away from the Hamilton trip with all 3 points adding “We have put ourselves in a good position, but we’re not there yet and we’re taking nothing for granted. It was a good win but from a footballing perspective, we still have a lot of room for improvement.”
Gerdsen is hopeful of a large crowd on Sunday to maximise the home-ground advantage, and believes “the people of Canterbury are passionate about their sporting sides, and I am sure they will take the opportunity to see two of the best sides in the competition go head-to-head.”
The enormity of task ahead for The Dragons this Sunday is not lost on Gerdsen, who points out “the Auckland City side has not lost a game in since January 2015, that’s a 24 games unbeaten streak.”
The Dragons record is also encouraging, with one loss from the sides last 7 outings, something Gerdsen puts down to the “positive, attacking style of football which has been embraced by the team this season.”
A win on Sunday will keep the Dragons on track for their first trip to the playoffs since losing the semi-final to Auckland City, during 2012/13 season.”
