WHITTAKER BAGS BACK-TO-BACK VICTORIES
Springston teenager Steffi Whittaker’s unbelievable start to the season has continued, snaring back-to-back victories in the Telford Junior Rider Series and Pony Mini Prix at the Southern A Show this weekend.
Returning to the scene of her first Junior Rider victory two weeks ago, Whittaker again proved too strong. Ten started the class, with seven combinations including Whittaker going through to the jump-off against the clock.
Second to go, Darfield’s Courtney Townsend on Suzy Fog set the early pace jumping clear in a time of 41.5 seconds. New combo Rohan Tennekoon (West Melton) on Double J Rumours played it safe jumping clean but finished slower, while Jamiee Bird and Wenrose Vertigo smashed the time, but sadly paid for it with two rails down. Out next, Whittaker and Ngahiwi Cruise flew round clear in a speedy 39.75 to take the win, with Townsend second, and Tennekoon third.
Whittaker was also to the fore in the Pony Mini Prix, scoring an easy victory aboard Moonlight Glow, backing up from winning the Country TV Pony Grand Prix at the SCNO Area Spring has Sprung Show last month. And for good measure the 15-year-old also finished runner-up in the Canterbury Saddlery Pony 1.10m South Island Points Prize aboard Burma Chilli.
Rose Alfeld, of Leeston, continued her strong run of form winning the Canterbury Equestrian Young Rider with My Super Nova, while the Caledonian Holdings Amateur was won by Angela Ruddenklau on the lovely, Starlight Donaldo.
The Let’s Bale Pro Amateur was taken out by Ashburton’s Zoe Shore on Zara with Tegan Fitszimon, of Rolleston, and Alacazam MH proving to strong in the Horse Mini Prix.
