Kiwi girls claim two canoe sprint world titles
Lisa Carrington raced a nail-biting K1 200m final tonight to claim gold, her second World Championship title in this
event. Hot on the heels of her third place in the K1 500m she is undeniably pleased with the win, although it was her
closest race of the championship. Her time of 39.522 was also the fastest of the champs but second placed Marta
Walczykiewicz of Poland certainly gave her a run for her money, looking like she might take the win until the last ten
metres of the race. Carrington however, put on a burst of speed in the final few metres to secure the top spot by just
0.19 seconds.
Earlier in the day Teneale Hatton also took top honours, smashing the K1 5000m for Gold 23 seconds ahead of the
Hungarian Renata Csay and third placed Anne Rikala of Finland. Teneale hit out hard from the start line and found clear
water early on. She took advantage of this to steadily increase her lead on the main pack, maintaining this throughout
the race. By the final lap there was no question as to her dominance in this race – it was just a question of how large
her lead would be.
The main group was pretty tight until the German and Finnish paddlers pulled away at the final turn gaining a 15 second
lead on the Norwegian and Bulgarian paddlers.
Teneale’s win in the U23 division of the ICF Ocean Surf Ski Championships in Portugal in July shows her strength in long
distance racing and prepared her well for this event.
Ben Fouhy placed 18th in the K1 5000m and the final race of the day for the kiwis will be the Mens K4 1000m at 12.40am
NZ time.
