Cunningham looks for clean run in Canterbury
After a torrid run across the opening three rounds of the Brian Green Property Group New Zealand Rally Championship, Clint Cunningham is looking to turn his fortunes around and kick start his challenge for the rookie title at this weekend’s Stadium Cars/VINZ Rally Canterbury.
Despite a boost pipe failure at round one and a crash at round two, Cunningham managed to bank a strong haul of points, but a driveline failure on the opening stage of round three has dropped him out of the rookie championship lead and back to third place.
For both Cunningham and co-driver Greg Ruka, it will be their first experience of the forestry roads used on the Canterbury event so the pair are unsure of exactly what to expect when they attack the special stages on Sunday.
But despite their lack of experience on the roads, the pair know that a top result in Canterbury is a must if they wish to remain in contention for the NZRC rookie title.
“First things first, we just want a trouble free run for once this season,” says Cunningham. “But although we are on the back foot, we are still focused on our goal to take out the rookie championship this season so we will be aiming for a top result.”
As well as continued support from RCK Contractors, TGR Automotive, Dunlop and AA Carriers, Mofas Mobile First Aid Supplies has also come on board as a team sponsor.
The Stadium Cars/VINZ Rally Canterbury kicks off with a ceremonial start on Saturday at The Palms in Christchurch from 3pm with the high-speed action starting from Rangiora at 7am the following day. Crews will contest nine high-speed special stages covering a total of 143 kilometres before returning to The Palms for the finish just after 4.30pm.
