Great News for Cricket Fans
Dunedin (Tuesday, 30 July 2013) – Hosting three Cricket World Cup matches here in 2015 is a wonderful coup for Dunedin, Mayor Dave Cull says.
The ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 is being jointly hosted by Australia and New Zealand from 14 February to 29 March 2015.
World Cup 2015 officials announced the New Zealand tournament fixtures at a function in Wellington today. Mr Cull, who attended the ceremony, says being chosen as a host city is great news for local cricket fans and the wider city.
Otago has a proud tradition of successful cricketers, such as Bert Sutcliffe, Glenn Turner and Brendon McCullum, and holding World Cup matches here will inspire other players and delight fans.
Dunedin also has great cricket facilities.
“The University Oval is the most attractive cricket ground in New Zealand and is reminiscent of a county cricket ground at its best.”
Mr Cull says as well as the boost to the sport itself, hosting the international matches will attract many visitors to Dunedin, bringing significant economic benefits.
The DCC and Otago Cricket put in a joint bid to secure matches for Dunedin.
Otago Cricket Chief Executive Ross Dykes says, “The upgraded University Oval has already hosted five test matches, but quality one-day internationals such as the World Cup is something new and exciting for our venue.
“The World Cup matches will provide Otago Cricket with an excellent opportunity to involve schools and clubs in support of national teams that might not be household names.”
The Dunedin fixtures will be:
Tuesday, 17 February 2015, New Zealand v Qualifier (Q3)
Sunday, 22 February 2015, Sri Lanka v Qualifier (Q2)
Thursday, 26 February 2015, Qualifier (Q2) v Qualifier (Q3)
