Haier Pulse Join Wellington's ANZAC Celebrations

Wellington is set to establish its position as the venue for all future ANZAC Weekend sporting celebrations, as the city announces another major trans-Tasman event. Earlier this year, St Kilda Saints met the Sydney Swans in an historic ANZAC match, a first for both the Australia Football League (AFL) and the capital and next year elite netball is coming to the party.

In 2014, Wellington will add the Haier Pulse and Melbourne Vixens to the capital’s events calendar when the teams play an ANZ Championship game at the TSB Arena on Saturday 26 April.

This year’s AFL game was the first in a three-year deal between the sport's governing body and Wellington City Council.  The council is keen to extend its celebrations to other leading sporting codes and partnering with the Haier Pulse is the next key stage in developing the programme of events.

Sports and Events Portfolio Leader John Morrison is delighted to add another sporting opportunity to the weekend. “We’re thrilled with the double header and from the city’s point of view to have the Haier Pulse hosting the Melbourne Vixens during the same weekend that it hosts an AFL game is a fantastic opportunity.

“It is great to have our flagship women’s sports team the Haier Pulse, who not only represent Wellington, but also women, to share with our ANZAC partners the celebrations and commemorations of ANZAC.”

“Over the years, our youngsters have really taken on board the idea that ANZAC day recognises and celebrates the dedicated people who have served our country. They have a good appreciation that this day also acknowledges service to our country. Sport is a good way of spreading this message.”

“2014 will be the centenary year since the start of the First World War and the team’s involvement will be significant as part of the ongoing legacy the council hopes to develop through this important sporting weekend.”

Acting Haier Pulse and Netball Central Zone Chief Executive Officer Libby Carson would like to see the game become a regular fixture. “We're thrilled to be part of the ANZAC weekend celebrations in 2014 and to be competing with our Australian counterparts, the Melbourne Vixens.

“It seems fitting that we are hosting an ANZAC game here in Wellington, the home of the National War Memorial.

“We'd like to see this become a regular fixture on the Wellington sporting calendar and look forward to working with the Wellington City Council on this."
