Halfpipe Snowboarder Bex Sinclair Coming Back Strong

Wanaka – (11 July 2013) – New Zealand Snowboard Team member Bex Sinclair is still focusing on the 2014 Winter Olympics post her December knee Injury.

Snowboarder Rebecca ‘Bex’ Sinclair (Wanaka) has been having a great start to the New Zealand winter season. “After having my first few days back on a snowboard I am so excited because my knee is feeling so much better than I expected it would, I rehabbed really hard and now it’s paying off!” Sinclair says.

After heading overseas in November last year Sinclair was gearing up for an intense Northern Hemisphere winter made up of five Halfpipe Olympic qualifying events. Unfortunately at the first major competition of the season, the Winter Dew Tour, Sinclair had a crash that tore her ACL in her knee and left her with no option but surgery and a six month recovery. Sinclair says, “It was devastating because I was riding well and feeling really good about the up and coming season, but these things happen and it meant I got a chance to go really hard at my rehab for the next six months and spend time on other areas of my performance like mental skills. It also meant I could add in some extra university papers, so I definitely found other things to keep me busy”.

Luckily, Sinclair has not dropped down too far in the rankings and sits 32 with the top 30 getting a nation spot to compete at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi at the start of next year. There are four more qualifying events and Sinclair still sees herself competing right up there with the best in Sochi.

“Although I aim to do this next World Cup (Winter Games NZ this August) as just getting back into competing, I know that I can do well enough in the next three World Cups to get back an Olympic spot and by February I will have my riding as good, if not better, than where it was pre my injury”.
The Winter Games NZ is one of the top five events on the international winter sports circuit. The 11-day programme includes no less than six World Cup events – FIS Halfpipe and Slopestyle for both Freeski and Snowboard at Cardrona plus two IPC Alpine Adaptive Slalom races at Coronet Peak.

Sinclair says, “Winter Games was awesome last time it was held (2011) and it is going to be even bigger and better this year so I am really excited to be part of it and hope that a lot of people get behind it as its great for New Zealand”.
