Wellington roller derby to take on international competition

Wellington’s roller derby fans will get their only chance this year to cheer on their home team against an international side this weekend.

Wellington's Richter City Roller Derby All Stars will be facing Melbourne's Victoria Roller Derby League Queen Bees on Saturday 13 July at TSB Bank Arena in Wellington.

This game will not only be the highest grade of roller derby to be played in New Zealand this year, but also the Wellington team’s final step toward achieving recognition as an internationally sanctioned roller derby team through the Women's Flat Track Derby Association.

“To be able to play in the official international competition, we need to prove that we can host a fully sanctioned bout,” said Richter City Chair Tuscany Otton, known on the track by her roller derby name Jem Molition.

“We are ready to take on the international competition and are excited to get this game under our belt and take on the rest of the world."

“Saturday’s game is the highlight of Wellington’s roller derby calendar this year," explained Ms Otton. "Victoria Roller Derby League is number one in Australia and are ranked number 38 out of 155 teams ranked globally, we’re really excited to see how we stack up against them.”

The VRDL All Stars are touring the US in 2013 and so are unable to travel to Wellington but they are sending their highly ranked B team, the Queen Bees instead, to battle the Richter City All Stars.

“We know that the Queen Bees are going to be blown away by our supporters, but hopefully by our playing as well!” said Ms Otton.

“Richter City really need our home fans to come out in purple and orange and help us take on the Melbourne side.”
