Final Day ICF Canoe Sprint World Cup 2, Racice, Czech Republic

Lisa Carrington made it a double header at World Cup 2 in the Czech Republic yesterday after winning her Olympic event the K1 200m hot on the heels of a win in the K1 500m, a new event for Lisa. The 200m win in a time of 41.42 was a little slower than the previous races due to a change in wind direction but Lisa was happy with the win ahead of Natalia Podolskaya of Russia (41.963) and Tina Dietze of Germany (42.39).

Overall this was another great regatta for the longer term goal of building towards Rio Olympics. The New Zealand team entered nine events in total with six of them being Olympic events.
Of the six Olympic events New Zealand came away with two golds and achieved five A finals was fourth in the B final.

While the fields in some of the woman’s events were lighter for this regatta, it is pleasing to see the woman achieving two personal best times. Lisa’s personal best set in the WK1 500m was significant, as it was inside the top 10 fastest ever times. Lisa came to Europe with the intention of continuous learning and gaining some confidence about the 500m event. Winning the double is certainly an added bonus and shows the ability and potential of the athlete.

The new pairing of the woman’s K2 500m, Teneale Hatton and Rachael Dodwell, also came to Europe with the intention to learn and gain experience. While they have had some races where the pair has struggled to get the combination connected they have come away with two A final results. Again this shows the raw potential for this crew which, with further refinement, points to a strong future.

The head coach and woman’s coach, Gordon Walker is certainly pleased with the results although was not surprised by Lisa’s 500m time. He knew she was capable of it but was “just a matter of when she would produce the time”. Gordon is also excited by the challenge of refining the WK2 500m crew helping them to produce more consistent results but he knows the progress gets slower as you get closer to the winning end of the field.

Ben Fouhy is enjoying the environment and is building improving results linked with confidence in each race. Ben faces a tough field with seasoned performers leading out, with no one person having the ability to control that field.

The team has two weeks this time before the final World Cup in Poland. The team is looking forward to settling into one place for an extended time and catching their breath. Often the last World Cup is the most competitive as some of the European teams use it as selection races for the World Championships later in August.
