Vaughan Sets Sights on Senior Scalps

November 23, 2011: It is possibly just a matter of time before Rotorua's Cameron Vaughan is shaking up the nation's senior elite motocross riders.

The 15-year-old Yamaha ace is certainly doing that to the junior ranks and the bad news there is that he's still got another six months of eligibility, with the 2012 junior nationals next April likely to fall within that time frame.

"Yes, I figure I have one more junior nationals to go before I step up fulltime to the seniors," said Vaughan as he relaxed in the pits following his junior 15-16 years' 125cc class win at the weekend's Auckland Motocross Championships.

He finished with a national ranking of No.3 in this year's junior nationals and says he's determined to clinch a national crown before stepping up the grades.

Vaughan won the national 85cc cross-country title in the separate but similar dirt bike code in 2009, but it is national motocross glory he seeks most.

His performance at the Auckland Motocross Championships during Saturday's junior phase of competition was very impressive indeed, the Craig Stevens Motorcycles Yamaha ace finishing 1-2-1 in his three outings.

"I had a bad start in the second race and I was nearly last away, but managed to take the first big double jump and leapt past about 10 riders in one go. It didn't look pretty but it got the job done.

"I think that taking calculated risks is what motocross is all about."

His impressive ride through the field in that race - from last place to finish second - underscored the young man's ability and it is this talent that will set him up for further glory when he hits the senior ranks in less than six months' time.
