MoveMe Edgar Centre Have a Go Day

Dunedin, 8 November 2011 - If you’ve ever thought about trying a new sport or activity but just never got around to it, here’s your opportunity. MoveMe and the Edgar Centre have teamed up to show Dunedin people the opportunities available for being more physically active in Dunedin.

The MoveMe Edgar Centre Have a Go Day is taking place this Sunday, 13 November from 10am to 12noon at the Edgar Centre. Whether you’re into dance, sports or something more relaxing like pilates – there’ll be something available for everyone’s fitness level. There will be over 25 activities and sports for people to try including yoga, geocaching, water sports, group fitness classes, ceroc dancing, basketball, indoor bowls, athletics, mountain biking, table tennis, tennis, pilates, futsal, masters games events, personal training and much more. There will also be a number of physical activity resources for people to take away with them including the popular Dunedin City Council walking maps.

The event is free for everyone to attend and all activities on the day are also free. It is a rare opportunity for adults to try many activities in the one place. There will be lots of giveaways on the day and activities for the kids too.

The aim of the event is to help people find activities they enjoy doing with the hope that they will continue with these resulting in an increase in their physical activity levels. It is also an opportunity for the Edgar Centre to showcase what the facility offers. For more information see www.moveme.org.nz.

Background

MoveMe is a Getting Dunedin Active initiative involving expertise from local partners with major sponsorship from the Dunedin City Council.

'Getting Dunedin Active' (GDA), Dunedin’s Physical Activity Strategy (2008) was developed by and is owned and implemented by a representative cross section of the city's physical activity-related agencies with the vision: "All Dunedin residents living active, healthy and enjoyable lifestyles".

During the strategy's research and development phase, it quickly became evident that Dunedin people had a little awareness of and understanding about physical activity resources, opportunities, and providers at either city or neighbourhood level. These factors were identified as significant barriers to people’s potential to participate in physical activity.

GDA partners have collaborated to address this issue, by developing the comprehensive and city-wide promotional campaign, MoveMe, to increase Dunedin people’s awareness of and participation in physical activity. The campaign’s primary target group is young adults (from 25 years old) through to older adults who aren’t regularly active, but have the intention of becoming more active.
