Ashley and Rufer complete third stage
of TEAR Fund Poverty Cycle
Beijing gold medallist sailboarder, Tom Ashley and FIFA Oceania Player of the Century Wynton Rufer, took part in the Auckland stage of the national TEAR Fund Poverty Cycle event, which aims to raise funds for at-risk children and youth in New Zealand, and in TEAR Fund’s child projects overseas.
The national event involves cyclists riding from Invercargill and Whangarei over 11 days and meeting on the steps of Parliament on March 4. Some cyclists will take part in various stages of the event, including rising tri-athlete star, 19-year-old Michael Poole, who cycled the Whangarei to Auckland leg. Ashley said one of the reasons he took part in the event was to raise funds for those who hadn’t received the same privileges that he had growing up. Both Brothers in Arms in Auckland, one of the recipients of Poverty Cycle funds, and TEAR Fund, offer children and young people hope of a better future.
Part of the Poverty Cycle event includes four family-friendly rides in Auckland, New Plymouth and Nelson, on March 5. The Christchurch ride has been postponed following the earthquake.
Poverty Cycle endorsers also include former All Black Michael Jones.
