New Zealand Cycle Trail gives $3.4million to Waikato River Trail
Nga Haerenga, The New Zealand Cycle Trail project has reached a major milestone with the signing of its first contract for the Waikato River Trail.
The contract for $3.4 million was signed on Friday, 30 April in Tokoroa with the South Waikato District Council and Waikato River Trails Trust.
John Dunn, Programme Manager, congratulated the applicants saying this trail has had a high-profile since the Prime Minister, John Key, launched the Cycle Trail project at Little Waipa Domain on the Waikato River on 10 November 2009.
“I want to congratulate Waikato River Trail Trust on the excellent work they have put into getting this contract signed. This trail has always enjoyed tremendous support from the community and its sponsors and this funding will help get the last 41 kilometres of the 100 kilometre trail ready in time for the World Rowing Championships in October.”
“The funds will ensure that the Trust can maintain its current staff levels of 24 to get the trail completed.”
“The contract, for up to $3.4 million, will help accomplish the goals of the Cycle Trail project which are to generate lasting economic, social and environmental benefits for our communities through a network of world class cycling experiences. This project will enhance our reputation as a premium tourist destination.”
Mr Dunn says this milestone is a great achievement for the project team. The team is currently committed to bringing the other 6 Quick Start projects to contract stage while ensuring the 13 Phase 2 cycle trails, which were approved for feasibility in February, are ready to meet their 31 May deadline.
