Van Gisbergen Sets the Pace in Abu Dhabi

SP Tools Racing’s Shane van Gisbergen has continued his time sheet topping efforts heading into the first round of this year's Australian V8 Supercar championship series at the spectacular Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi this week.

In the final practice session that finished under lights on Thursday evening the 20-year-old Kiwi was initially pipped by Team Vodafone's Jamie Whincup in the final seconds, only to have his quickest time of 1:58.2230 reinstated as the fastest lap of the day after Whincup was penalised for cutting a corner

“This track has a bit of everything, the first part of the circuit is quite open and has the corkscrew in there which really suited our car because we were the quickest in the first sector.

“At the end of the final session it cooled down so quickly when the sun went down, for one run there I had the sun in my eyes and then the next lap we were under lights.

“It’s awesome to have my name on the top of the timesheets on our first day in Abu Dhabi, the SP Tools Racing Falcon feels strong and I can’t wait for tomorrow’s race!”

Van Gisbergen also distinguished himself before he hit the track in Abu Dhabi this week, scoring a goal for his V8 Supercar drivers team in a friendly match against the local Beach Soccer squad.

The V8 Supercars hit the track today (Friday) at 2:10pm for a 20 minute qualifying session before this evening's 200km race under lights.
