Hunters - Be Alert

Hunters - Be Alert

With Easter weekend upon us in a couple of days, hunters will be heading of into the hills to enjoy what could be a good April ‘roar’.

Trevor Dyke, National President of the New Zealand Deerstalkers’ Association reminds hunters that they should ensure that they not only enjoy their hunt, but make sure that they see and be seen. The Association encourages the wearing of hi-viz clothing.

They must also remember, that every hunter is responsible for the bullet that leaves a firearm under their control. Further, they must also identify their target beyond all doubt. A deer is not a deer until you can see the whole deer.

Dyke recalled that last year there were five hunting related deaths, all of which could have been avoided if proper due care had been observed. It is horrifying to think that research has indicated that the average distance involved in hunting tragedies is between 30-40 metres!

Experience only plays a small part in going out to hunt and returning safely, the majority comes from carrying out good, safe practices.

Hunters are also reminded with the early onset of colder weather that they should also be ensuring that they do go bush to make sure that they are well prepared, have the appropriate gear with them and tell someone exactly where they are going. When making decisions on where to hunt with fellow members of your hunting party; make sure that you stick to what was agreed upon.
