Friday Arvo Surf Update
Friday Arvo Surf Update
The weekend is looking good for waves and we have swell coming at us from a couple of angles.
It is feeling like it is going to be real cold this weekend. Snow is bucketing down in the South Island and the cold southerly will push its way up the country. If you are keen on a bit of snowboarding don't forget to check our sister site out www.snow.co.nz. The guys from Snowco have just put a new camera in on Mt Taranaki. Just perfect for New Plymouth and Hamilton boarders to get the skinny on what 's going down on your local mountain.

What's Hot
WEATHER SITUATION:
A cold, strong southerly flow is reaching up out of the deep southern ocean and is bringing swell and snow with it. We have just the best looking low sitting off the East Coast of the Wairarapa. The two lows that produced the butty swell yesterday and today, that we have seen from Dunedin north to Gisborne, are slowly heading further to the east. We have another low just coming out from under Tasmania that will head this way. Plus there is a high sitting on Australia, but we won't see it until next week.
REGIONAL REPORT:
North Island
Northland; Auckland; Coromandel; Waikato; B.O.P:
West Coast: This afternoon we have a messy southwest swell of 3-5 feet on the rise and we are expecting it to really kick in tomorrow arvo and by Sunday be rather large. Southwest to westerly winds all weekend, and back to southerly late Sunday. HT 1230.
East Coast: We have a small northeast swell of 1-2 feet easing, with a fresh offshore beating it into submission. Not a lot of hope for the weekend with strong offshores forecast. You never know though, as the low moves off further to the east, the East Coast we might just start to see an east to southeast swell develop by Monday. LT 1620.
Gisborne; Wairarapa:
Southwest winds this weekend quite strong in Gisborne and real strong in the Wairarapa. We have 3-5 feet of rising southwest swell and we are expecting more over the weekend. We are expecting solid 6 foot plus. HT 0910.
Taranaki:
Southwest to west winds this weekend, Great...not. Rising southwest and we should see a solid 6 foot plus down the coast if not bigger. It is looking like the winds will be pretty strong onshores. HT 1320.
Wellington:
West Coast; Light southwest here this afternoon and no swell to speak of. As you head further north you will start to see a small southwest to west swell of a couple of feet. This will get bigger, but you will have to get out of the lee of the South Island and then the problem is the wind direction. HT 1320.
South Coast; Light northerly and a pumping south swell. Solid 4-5 feet with bigger sets. The wind is the problem though, with a fresh to strong southerly just waiting to kick in. So heaps of south swell all weekend, but unfortunately south to southwest winds. The southerly has hit Christchurch and is about to get to Kaikoura, so look out here it comes. HT 1605.
South Island
West Coast:
We have a southwesterly swell this afternoon of 6-8 feet and strong southwest winds. No shortage of swell tomorrow, but it should start to ease on Sunday. Southwest winds tomorrow tending westerly and possibly northwest by late Sunday. HT 1420.
Kaikoura; Canterbury:
The southerly has hit Town and the weather has turned to the proverbial. Plenty as we say, of south swell on the other side with a messy 4-5 feet. We have a couple of feet in Town. Southerlies all weekend, slowly heading towards the southwest by Sunday. We can expect to see the angle of the swell change slightly and tend more to the south. Kaikoura is 3-5 feet this afternoon and they are just waiting for the southerly to hit. It is looking like all hell is about to break loose. South to southwest winds all weekend and we should see the swell rekick tomorrow. HT 0940.
Dunedin; Southland:
It is still big and messy this afternoon, with a solid 6 feet from the south. We also have a strong as southerly onshore. Now, the wind is forecast to be southerly tomorrow as well and then go the west /southwest by Sunday. The swell should still be a good size tomorrow morning but will start to ease and continue to ease through Sunday. HT 1520.
