Weather over New Zealand is expected to become settled over most of the country as we head towards the weekend. The sun
has already broken through for many in the South Island, though some scattered showers are expected about the hills and
ranges north of Mt. Cook today. For the North Island, it is a showery day today, with a risk of thunderstorms, but the
weather will begin to dry up on Friday.
“Friday is looking like a fine day for much of the country, thanks to a high building over New Zealand,” said MetService
Meteorologist Claire Flynn. “A few remaining showers in the south and east of the North Island are expected to gradually
clear, and many people will have a sunny Friday.”
Heading into the weekend, the ridge of high pressure is expected to hold on, meaning fine and dry weather for many. The
exception to this is a front affecting the southern half of the South Island, bringing scattered rain and gradually
spreading as far north as Canterbury.
“With the more settled end to the week, temperatures are also expected to warm up,” Flynn said. “Alexandra is expecting
a high of 17C on Thursday, but heating up to 28C on Friday, so people will definitely feel the difference. The North
Island will take an extra day to warm up, but temperatures in the twenties are expected across the board this weekend.”
As we head into next week, a low pressure system is expected to form during the first half of the week, meaning a return
to unsettled weather.
