Spring continues to bring wet weather to many parts of the country this week, with MetService issuing Severe Weather
Wanings and Watches for the lower North Island, and northeastern parts of the South Island for Monday and Tuesday.
“A couple of slow moving fronts bring persistent rain to central parts of the country at the start of the week.” says
Meteorologist Rob Kerr.
“Our current Heavy Rain Warnings highlight the Wairarapa, Eastern Wellington, Marlborough and Nelson as the places
expected to see the most rain, with northern Canterbury covered by a Heavy Rain Watch,” he adds.
Sustained rainfall means high rivers and a high potential for slips affecting roads, such as the Kaikoura Coast or
Takaka Hill Road. For any information about current road conditions head to the NZTA live map at www.nzta.govt.nz/traffic
“Dunedin has already seen record amounts of rain this month, so it is good news that the heavier falls stay further
north, but the easterlies are driving cloud and occasional drizzle over the region for a few more days,” Kerr says.
The upper North Island has a very different weather story this week, with fine days interrupted by potential afternoon
showers or thunderstorms, so even regions outside of the Severe Weather Warnings and Watches may see heavy falls or even
hail.
