Thunderstorms, hail, snow, rain and wind… Believe it or not, it’s spring! MetService are forecasting a large spread of
weather across New Zealand this week, the result of a complex low-pressure system that has spread over the country.
Thunderstorms are a concern with MetService forecasting significant risks over the coming days. “Conditions are ideal
for thunderstorm development, with plenty of low-level moisture and colder temperatures in the upper atmosphere,”
MetService meteorologist Tui McInnes explains.
A Severe Thunderstorm Watch is currently in place for the upper South Island, with the possibility of large hail and
heavy rain.
“This is a concern for farmers and growers with hail posing a risk to crops, orchards and vines, not to mention driving
conditions can become hazardous,” says McInnes. “we have also seen snow as low as 350 metres above sea level and while
not unheard of, is unusual for this time of year.”
Heavy Snow Warnings and Watches are currently in place for parts of the South Island, and MetService is reminding
people to stay up to date with the latest information.
“Luckily the snow isn’t set to last, with temperatures in the South Island set to rise again towards the end of the
week. Monday and the early hours of Tuesday are the focus for the snow,” McInnes explains.
The end of the week looks somewhat calmer and temperatures are forecast to increase.
“There is an improving trend to the weather for most of us during Thursday and on Friday,” says McInnes. “But it doesn’t
last long, with a wet and windy weekend on the cards for most.”
