More changeable spring weather for the royal tour

MetService is forecasting showers and thunderstorms over much of the North Island and upper South Island today. This afternoon’s visit to Abel Tasman National Park by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex is looking wet, but they should miss out on the thunderstorms.
“It may be a damp barbeque but good weather for tree planting,” says forecaster Cameron Coutts.
A low pressure system moves across the North Island tonight bringing strong westerly winds to Northland and Auckland, possibly gusting 100km/h in exposed places. A south to southwest flow then covers the country on Tuesday, which means gale force southerlies for Harry and Meghan’s departure from Wellington. By the time the couple arrive in Auckland later Tuesday morning, the winds will have eased.
“If you are planning to catch the royals at the Viaduct tomorrow afternoon dress for a mix of sunshine, showers, brisk winds and temperatures around 16°C,” comments Coutts.
Wednesday brings the pick of the weather with plenty of sunshine on the cards as the tour heads to Rotorua.
The generally fine weather is also expected across the rest of the country into Wednesday evening as kids head out trick-or-treating, so get Halloween costumes ready. After Wednesday however, it remains unsettled over the country for the remainder of the week and into the weekend, so keep up to date with the latest forecasts on our app or on MetService.com.
