Enjoy the weekend weather as change is coming
MetService is encouraging everyone to make the most of the weekend’s weather as a cold front approaches from the south bringing a return of ‘winter-like’ conditions.
Meteorologist Mark Bowe says fine spells are the order of the day for most around the country today. There is the chance of some inland showers over the North Island while the South Island will be dry, apart from some rain for Fiordland.
Bowe says: “The weather for Friday is really a tale of two halves. A trough moving over the central and upper parts of the North Island on Friday will mean most people there will experience some showers during the day. “
“Pushing in behind this is a ridge of high pressure over the South Island which will clear any remaining showers there.”
“Saturday will really be the best day of the weekend. The ridge will continue to build over the South Island and slowly push north over the North Island, clearing the weather. However, a few showers linger for those on the eastern coast of the North Island,” he says.
“Sunday will be another fine day for the North Island, with the ridge maintaining fine weather for most and just a couple of brief morning and afternoon showers for those east of the Huiarau and Raukumara ranges.
“However, a cold front will move onto the lower South Island Sunday evening bringing very cold air behind it. As cold air floods over the country early next week we may see a return to winter weather with snow possible in the south,” Bowe says.
